Shared car
Keolis goes beyond the pure provision of public transport and aims to help those who have no other option than to use a car. Modes such as car sharing and ride sharing can fit in seamlessly into the chain of mobility.
Keolis increasingly offers public transport authorities the opportunity to launch car sharing schemes. A car sharing scheme offers people, on payment of an annual subscription, the chance to rent a car for a short period of time at any time of the day. The rental system is managed on Internet or by phone and the cars are parked in specific stations across the urban zone. The flexibility of the scheme often allows the hirer to leave the car in a different place to that at which he/she collected it. The hirer is then invoiced or debited at the end of each month for his/her use. According to research, over 70% of trips carried out during car sharing could not be substituted by the use of public transport. Car sharing operated by Keolis has been in operation in Lille since 2007, and is being introduced in Bordeaux, Pau and on a ride-sharing basis for tourists on an island in Britanny.
Keolis' furthers its shared car policy through a decentralised ride-sharing approach. The group has signed a cooperation agreement with Green Cove, the French leader in ride-sharing schemes, to offer PTAs bespoke car sharing schemes across their regions. Ride sharing between 240 people can theoretically lead to savings of 1500 car parking spaces, 91 to 140 euros, and 117 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions (source: STIF, Paris region PTA).
