Keolis renews Lyon urban transport contract

July 2010

On 8 July 2010 Keolis was renewed as operator of the TCL public transport network serving the Lyon metropolitan area.

TCL is the largest network in Europe to be contracted to a private operator.

The 6-year contract will start up on 1st January 2011, generating aggregate turnover of €2 billion.

Keolis is the historic operator of the Lyon metropolitan network and  over the years has overseen and contributed to its evolution, introducing metro lines from the 1970s and most notably the high capacity driverless line D in 1991; bringing the tram back to the city in 2001; and introducing and operating the largest trolleybus fleet in France.

Today the TCL network has four metro lines, four tram lines, eight trolleybus lines, more than a hundred bus routes and two funicular railways, as well as 6,000 park and ride spaces. Keolis Lyon employs 4,300 people and delivers 1.4 million daily passenger journeys.

Over the past franchise, Keolis Lyon launched new tram lines T3 and T4, and also successfully completed a wide-ranging overhaul of its collective bargaining agreements. In addition, Keolis was instrumental in the design of the new Atoubus network, soon to be introduced in the city.

The overwhelming vote of confidence by the SYTRAL public transport authority rewards Keolis' ability to bring concrete responses to its key criteria:

  • putting the TCL network client first
  • controlling costs on the network
  • improving the management of vehicles and fixed assets
  • limiting the environmental impact of the network, and adopting new technologies
  • ensuring reliable passenger information

Finally, Keolis reaffirmed its commitment to supporting SYTRAL in exploring new technological solutions and making a flagship of its increasingly innovative multi-modal network.
