Keolis renewed in Sète, with the objective of increasing network ridership by 17%

28th June 2022

The conurbation authority Sète Agglopôle Méditerranée has once again placed its trust in Keolis for the operation and maintenance of its public transport network SAM.

Lasting a period of seven years and four months, this public service delegation contract starts on 1 September 2022 and will generate a total revenue of €88 million.

By the end of the contract, Keolis is expecting a 17% increase in ridership to 3.6 million passengers.

An enhanced transport offer

As part of this contract, Keolis’ main responsibilities will be to:

  •  improve the punctuality and connections of the network with a new operational support and passenger information system,

  • accelerate the digitalisation of the network, in particular by deploying a new ticketing system based on open payment, real-time information and new passenger information terminals,

  • contribute to the energy transition in the local community, by introducing 11 electric buses and 3 new articulated buses, as well as a BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) service planned for July 2024.

Over the course of the contract, Keolis will also add 100 new bicycles to its long-term electrically-assisted bike rental service, doubling the fleet that entered service in the summer of 2021.

Consisting of 23 lines, including a new link between the municipalities of Frontignan and Balaruc-le-Vieux, the SAM network serves 14 municipalities, which represent an area of over 125,000 inhabitants. The fleet is made up of more than 250 vehicles (buses, bicycles and electrically assisted scooters for long-term hire).

The renewal of this contract allows Keolis, which has been operating the conurbation's transport network since 2015, to strengthen its presence in the Occitanie region. In addition to the Sète city transport network, Keolis also operates the networks of the Agde, Alès, Auch, Foix, Narbonne and Tarbes-Lourdes conurbations.
